CLIENT STORIES Tenaquip Handles Customs Importers have to ask themselves: when do I become master of my domain? If you're relying on a Customs broker to clear all of your shipments, then you're probably missing a lot of opportunities." says Murray McGee. McGee is speaking from his own experience as the Customs coordinator at Tenaquip Ltd. His Customs automation project saved the company about $44,000 a year in brokerage fees, and earned McGee a promotion. Tenaquip, headquartered in the Montreal suburb of Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue with branches in Ottawa and Toronto, is a major supplier of commercial and industrial equipment and supplies. A private company, with sales of $41 million per year and growing, it imports about 2,500 to 3,000 shipments annually, mostly from the United States. With Canada Customs making it easier for importers to clear their own goods, McGee decided "to see if there was a way we could get into the world of Customs. We felt we could do a better job ourselves, at a better price." McGee says the most challenging – and important – task was "correctly classifying the SKUs that we need to work with. Once that took place, then it becomes a matter of just making sure the operation is maintained. Now, as long as the system is kept up-to-date, it almost runs itself." The software paid for itself in under a year by eliminating Tenaquip's hefty brokerage bills, says McGee. What's more, MSR's consulting team helped recover almost $20,000 in import duties. As more importers choose to clear their own goods, Customs is becoming more responsive to their needs, says McGee. For example, Customs "tries to assign one person to your account. That makes it a lot easier if a problem comes up, rather than having to try and explain it to someone you've never talked to before."
